Their performances are regarded the measure of all things rock. Ingenuity, passion and a charismatic live band’s authenticity rolled into one, their audience is deemed to go wild with euphoria. Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band have excelled in setting unique standards of live performance, and have been moving fans around the world for more than three decades. And: They will be coming to Austria next summer!
On July 5, the band, often praised as the best of all live formations, will be playing in Vienna. The new tour cycle is introduced by the release of Springsteen’s 24th album “Working on a Dream.” The title track is one of twelve new Springsteen compositions, and two bonus songs produced by Brendan O’Brien and recorded with the E-Street Band. One of them, “The Wrestler,” was written for the Mickey Rourke film by the same title and has recently earned Springsteen the prestigious Golden Globe. The earlier album “Magic” excelled with the virtuously playing E-Street Band’s “high energy rock.” The E-Street album “The Rising,” which was released before “Magic,” was top of the German charts in 2002. A million-seller, the album was honored with three Grammies.
Born in the small town of Freehold in the US state of New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen represents the authenticity and consciousness of his generation, which he aroused, surprised and captivated time and again. Names like “Boss,” “Marathon Man,“ „Last of the Mohicans of Rock Music“ and „Leader of the Gang“ are but cut-and-dried attempts to describe an artist eluding simplifying categories. 24 albums selling more than 100 million copies and a dozen Grammies are documents of a journey marked by numerous successes, obstacles, but also turnabouts in the face of an overwhelming pressure of expectations. “The River,” for example, was followed by “Nebraska,” both one of his darkest and most beautiful albums, and the “Philadelphia” euphoria and the “Greatest Hits” release were followed by “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” a poetic-folkloristic collection of songs inspired by John Steinbeck’s novel “The Grapes of Wrath.”
“Born in the USA” (1984) is considered the key work of Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band. With the album’s title single and hits like “Dancing in the Dark,” “Cover Me,” “I am on Fire,” “Glory Days,” “I’m Going Down” and “My Home Town,” Springsteen’s message has reached an audience of millions. Writing hymns about the “other side” of society and the American dream – about the underdogs, desperados and dreamers –, Springsteen became an icon of popular culture.
In live concerts lasting over three hour, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band create dynamics and energy to the point of ecstasy. The power of the songs takes hold of their audience and leads them from one musical climax to the next, up to the famous, gripping encores. In Vienna, fans will be meeting rock history’s most passionate live group – and, according to Bruce Springsteen, they are playing better than ever.
